Baupost Group holdings · latest filing

Seth Klarman has run Baupost since he helped found it in 1982, straight out of business school, with a small group of partners and families. It buys what looks cheap against what it is worth, and when little does, it is known for holding a large share in cash rather than lowering the bar. Much of its money goes into distressed debt, real estate and private deals, none of which a 13F shows; this page covers only its US-listed shares. The filings run from 2013.

“A margin of safety is achieved when securities are purchased at prices sufficiently below underlying value to allow for human error, bad luck, or extreme volatility in a complex, unpredictable, and rapidly changing world.”

Margin of Safety (book), 1991
