The same starting cash. How did they end up so differently?

John waits. Daniel watches fear, Samuel follows a calendar, and Alicia waits for a great investor’s filings. Emma decides to start right away.

Give all five the same cash, then rewind history. Who was ahead? When did the order change?

Read their five decisions

Investing feels too difficult. He keeps everything in BIL, a U.S. Treasury bill ETF.

He buys in extreme fear and sells in extreme greed, keeping his waiting funds in BIL.

He invests a fixed share of his initial cash each month and never sells. The rest stays in BIL.

She follows new positions disclosed by Berkshire, then follows additions and reductions in stocks she owns.

She invests everything on day one and holds.

By default Daniel trades once on entering a zone. All cash amounts use the initial budget, not the changing portfolio value.

How is this calculated?

The first edition starts in 2025. All five use the same starting date and initial cash, with no extra deposits or borrowing. Uninvested cash and sale proceeds stay in BIL, using its actual historical return rather than a fixed rate. Data updates weekly.

All ETFs and Alicia’s stocks use dividend-adjusted price ratios, assuming fractional investment and reinvested distributions. This does not reconstruct actual shares or executed orders. ETF operating expenses are reflected in prices; taxes, trading costs, exchange rates and inflation are not separately calculated.

Daniel observes the Fear & Greed Index on trading days and trades at the following trading day’s close. By default he trades once when entering fear ≤10 or greed ≥90. The first observation can trigger a trade; a missing observation creates no signal and the first observation after a gap cannot establish a zone entry. The repeat option trades after every qualifying observation. Dollar amounts use the initial budget and cannot exceed available cash or holdings.

Samuel buys on the starting day and the first trading day of each later month, using 1–10% of initial cash. When cash runs low he transfers only the remaining BIL; he adds no external funds. Emma invests everything at the starting close. A non-trading start moves forward, and a non-trading end moves back.

Alicia follows only Berkshire disclosures published after the comparison begins. She does not copy its pre-existing portfolio. At the next trading day’s close she allocates a share of initial cash (20% by default) across new stocks and additions to stocks she already owns. Sales are processed first; purchases are capped by remaining funds.

Allocation weights use the increase in reported share counts multiplied by the quarter-end reported value per share. These are not actual purchase amounts or execution prices. She sells the disclosed share-count reduction proportion, fully exiting on a full disposal. Stock splits and verified identifier changes are distinguished from trades. Amendments and previously confidential holdings enter only when publicly disclosed. This does not reproduce Berkshire’s actual trading dates or returns.

Return compares total assets with initial cash. The largest decline is the maximum peak-to-trough drop since the start. Ranks and drawdowns use only observations up to the selected date; the full chart displays recorded history. Missing held-stock prices are not fabricated. Choosing a different period can change the result.
